Hello! I’m Teija Vartiainen (b. 1985), a freelance designer mostly working with prints and textiles for fashion and interior industries. Currently I work in Helsinki and enjoy the Nordic way of living and seeing the world around us. I have completed Master’s Programme in Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
Since 2012 I have designed textiles independently and via an agent mainly to Scandinavian, European, and Japanese companies such as H&M, Tiger of Sweden, Senshukai (Belle Maison), Sangetsu, and more. I enjoy to work with my three distinctive styles: experimental digital collages, playful hand-drawn stories, and sophisticated abstract surfaces. The versatility of styles allows to refresh the perspective, and reach wider clientele in different market segments.
My textile design process is based on intuition. I often find sensory illusions fascinating, such as creating illusory effects of depth or motion on a flat surface. In surface design there are two essential tools to make functioning designs: building an interesting flow of the repeat (the most laborious phase), and adjusting the relation between colour and composition (the most rewarding phase). Each project begins by looking for a new viewpoint on the theme I’m interested in. Through that I aim to explore and evolve my artistic practises.
My personal guideline is to maintain an honest, sensitive, and curious mindset towards new. Besides I’m available for freelance projects, I’m always open to new and challenging in-house job opportunities in Europe. If you have a job role in mind, please don’t hesitate to contact me via LinkedIn. I’m a member of Eyes on Talents platform by Floriane de Saint Pierre & Associés for talent in visual creative disciplines, and the EOT profile is available on request for recruiters. However, if you would like to meet for viewing, my works are available in tangible format too, containing research, artwork originals, and material samples.
